The first term of studies at IAM begins from the very basics of commercial website development technologies and concepts, and quickly ramps upwards. By the end of the term, students have acquired the skills to build solidly designed and functional websites. From the start, the IAM approach is integrated. Unlike other programs, we believe that students should learn proficiency in industry standard tools and current conceptual approaches. IAM also approaches the field according to a holistic approach where programming and design are not split, but are provided to students in an integrated approach that requires them to interweave design, coding, programming, and theory at each step. Besides full time instructor-led classes each day all day, students in Term 1, as in terms 2 and 3, are provided with small business clients for whom they are required to build websites as their major term projects. In the first term, students work with their clients in pairs or small groups. These clients themselves are woven into the curriculum and pay regularly scheduled visits to students according to a project management timeline that is core to the learning the students must achieve. The objective of Term 1, the First Certificate, is for students to understand and implement current coding practise complemented with good design and navigation. While they learn the conceptual basics of programming, the requirement of creating data-driven websites is the core of Term 2.
